Amplitude Energy Spud Juliet-1, offshore Victoria

On August 24, Amplitude Energy announced they had commenced drilling Juliet-1 in Victoria waters, targeting 48.8 Bcf prospective gas resource with an 84% success probability. The well, in joint venture with O.G. Energy, aims to evaluate gas quality and potential development, with results expected in 20-25 days.

Juliet-1 is an exploration well located in permit VIC/L24 within Commonwealth waters, adjacent to the existing Casino, Henry, Netherby (CHN) pipeline.

The Juliet prospect is supported by high Waarre C reservoir amplitudes, and a clear ‘flat spot’ at approximately 2,300m True Vertical Depth Sub-Sea (TVDSS) implying gas-water contact, both of which contribute to a probability of geological success of 84% (as reported by Amplitude Energy).

Gold Hydrogen Announce Ramsay 2 Flow Test Results

Following up on the announcement last month of success at Ramsay 1, Gold Hydrogen have announced the flow test results from Ramsay 2, the second well being tested as part of their 2026 campaign.

Ramsay 2 is reported to have delivered up to 20% helium purity, matching the impressive 19% previously achieved at Ramsay 1. Ramsay 2 achieved raw gas rates up to 128 million standard cubic feet per day and helium rates up to 24.3 million, with performance limited only by pump capacity not the reservoir.

Omega Announce the results of Taroom Trough Appraisal Well

Omega oil and gas have announced the results of their appraisal well Canyon-3 in the eastern Taroom Trough. Reporting to market on 24 August, Omega advised that results have exceeded expectations and provided strong evidence for a large-scale oil and gas province in the basin.

Canyon-3 reached a total depth of 3,792.

Elio Lanzilli is a senior petroleum geoscientist with over 25 years of experience across exploration, appraisal and development in numerous Asia–Pacific geological provinces, including the North West Shelf, Bonaparte Basin, Cooper Basin, Indonesia and PNG. With a PhD in sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy, his career began mapping the PNG foreland—an experience that shaped his practical, field‑driven approach to subsurface problem‑solving.

He recently completed his tenure as PNG Exploration Manager at Santos and is now establishing LZRG, a subsurface advisory practice aimed at supporting operators in exploration risk and opportunity.

Australia’s Energy Commodity Resources 2026 now available

On August 10 2026, it was announced that Australia's Energy Commodity Resources 2026 was now available. Geoscience Australia’s latest edition of the Australia’s Energy Commodity Resources (AECR) publication confirms Australia’s position as a reliable, competitive and globally significant energy supplier, while highlighting the nation’s growing role in the clean energy transition.

Delivering a comprehensive assessment of the nation’s non-renewable energy resources as at the end of 2024, AECR 2026 reports that energy commodity exports generated $180 billion in export earnings in 2023–24 – around 27% of Australia’s total export earnings.

Australia ranked as the eighth highest primary energy producer across the globe, accounting for 2.7% of global energy commodity production in 2024.

Quarterly Updates Highlight Cooper Basin Activity

Reviewing the quarterly updates from operators in the Cooper Basin points to ongoing activity with some exciting results reported.

During the last quarter, Santos reported drilling 21 wells across the Cooper Basin including 17 gas and four oil wells with 14 of them connected for production. They continue their flood recovery works following last year’s unprecedented flood event, despite record local rainfall, with 10 flood-impacted wells returned to production during the quarter. A further 30 development wells are drilled but unconnected, awaiting access to be restored.

JV Partner Beach reports that the wells they participated in included exploration success at the Kwagga and Chinstrap fields, with Kwagga 1 discovering gas in both the primary Toolachee Fm target, and also the secondary Patchawarra Fm, whilst Chinstrap 1 discovered gas in the Callamurra Sst.

Tamboran completes largest Beetaloo stimulation campaign

Tamboran Resources has successfully completed stimulation and activities on the Shenandoah South 3H (SS-3H), SS-4H and SS-5H wells in the Northern Pilot Area of the Beetaloo Basin.

The program represents the first three-well zipper stimulation undertaken in the basin, with 178 stages placed across approximately 30,000 feet within the Mid Velkerri B Shale formation, which represents the largest stimulation campaignundertaken in the Beetaloo Basin to date.

The three Shenandoah South wells are planned to be tied into the Sturt Plateau Compression Facility, where construction is nearing completion.

PESA-NSW/ACT is hosting what we hope to be the first of many reunions for people who at some point in time were part of the upstream oil and gas industry in Sydney. Andrew Nelson has been gathering plenty of old photographs and is putting together a fascinating package for a rolling slideshow and talk on the past efforts of our many forebears across the many generations since PESA was formed out of the then APPEA over fifty years ago.

It will be a sit-down luncheon at 12:30pm at the Castlereagh Boutique Hotel on Thursday 10 December 2026.

Australian Energy Producers have opened the Call for Papers for submissions to create the Technical & Business Program. The Technical & Business Program is again generously sponsored by bp and will feature both oral and visual (poster) presentations, selected through the Call for Papers process.

Submissions are invited from both Australian and overseas contributors, from diverse backgrounds, disciplines and perspectives, on a wide range of technical and strategic issues that shape our industry.
