Omega Announce the results of Taroom Trough Appraisal Well

Omega oil and gas have announced the results of their appraisal well Canyon-3 in the eastern Taroom Trough. Reporting to market on 24 August, Omega advised that results have exceeded expectations and provided strong evidence for a large-scale oil and gas province in the basin.

Canyon-3 reached a total depth of 3,792.

PESA Queensland June Meeting

PESA Queensland were delighted to welcome Dr Matthias Raiber as the speaker to their June technical lunch meeting. Dr Raiber leads CSIRO’s Sustainable Groundwater Futures team in Brisbane and was presenting their work investigating structural controls on aquifer connectivity in the Narrabri region of the Great Artesian Basin.

The presentation highlighted the integrated workflow they undertook to improve understanding of connectivity between coal seam gas reservoirs and the overlying aquifers. Using a combination of airborne electromagnetics, seismic, igneous intrusion dating and hydro-chemical tracer datasets, they were able to identify potential connectivity pathways and test for evidence of hydraulic connection.

The audience of approximately 40 professionals enjoyed the presentation whilst enjoying a delicious lunch courtesy of the Stamford Plaza and it triggered some excellent discussion.

Denison Gas Announce Baffle Creek Discovery

Queensland gas company Denison has confirmed a major new discovery in the Baffle Creek field of the Denison Trough in Central Queensland’s Bowen Basin, promising to bolster fuel and energy security. The Queensland government has welcomed the announcement as future support for the East Coast gas market with their media release reporting “This discovery reaffirms Queensland’s position as a critical energy supplier to Australia, with nearly 90 per cent of the East Coast gas market already supplied by Queensland.

Omega Commences Civil Works inAdvance of 2026/27 Drilling Program

Omega announced to the market in May that civil works for well-pad preparation had commenced for the first wells in their 2026/27 drilling program on the oil and gas-bearing eastern flank of the Taroom Trough. The wells are planned within their Canyon Project (PCAs 342 and 343, OMA 100%) and ATP 2081 (OMA 45%, Operator) in Queensland’s Taroom Trough.

The company advises the program is due to commence around the end of June 2026, following completion of preceding wells by another operator.

Australian Oil Co busy in the Surat Basin

On 15th May, Australia Oil Co announced their recent development and exploration activities in the Surat Basin to the market with production, development and exploration all underway.

Maiden oil lifting of 422 barrels by IOR from the Emu Apple Oil Field at the end of March, with the next lifting scheduled to occur around mid May. Production levels are advised to consistent with expectations of approximately 15 barrels of oil per day and 30% water cut.

On Thursday 28 th May PESA Qld held their second technical lunch for 2026. Comet Ridge’s Tor McCaul and Mel Fitzell gave a capacity crowd an update on the Mahalo Gas Hub project.

Comet Ridge has secured a significant acreage position at the Mahalo Gas Hub in the southern Bowen Basin. This region is shaping up to be a major gas production hub for the east coast, with proven ommercial production rates, development-ready 2P gas reserves, and excellent access to key infrastructure to domestic and LNG export markets.

Vale Farah Fazulah Abdullah

It is with great sadness that PESA Queensland shares news of the passing of our former colleague and friend, Farah Fazulah. Farah joined PESA when she moved to Australia and volunteered with the Queensland branch from 2023 before joining the PESA Queensland Committee in early 2024. Bringing her energy and enthusiasm to supporting with technical lunches and other committee events and helping to man the booth at AEP Brisbane in 2025, her energy was shared with the broader federal committee and PESA membership.

Farah moved to Australia and joined Central Petroleum as a geologist in 2021, focused on the Amadeus Basin in the Northern Territory.

Eastern Gas Announce Multi-Well Campaign at Venus CSG Project

Eastern Gas Corporation Limited confirmed 10th March that, following a successful and over subscribed IPO, the Company is now in the final stages of preparation to commence near-term appraisal drilling at their Project Venus coal seam gas project.

Project Venus lies in ATP2051 in the Surat Basin, Queensland. The permit sits within the Walloon -scale gas developments operated by Shell, APLNG Santos and Senex. These projects supply gas to both domestic and export markets via the Wallumbilla gas hub.

Ross met his wife Paula when he was 18 and she was 15 years old, when he moved next door. They developed a strong friendship playing tennis and board games. After dating for 6 years, they married in 1972, and welcomed two children, Tamara and Mark. Early evidence of entrepreneurial spirit was exhibited by a succession of fruitful real estate deals.

After graduating in geology and metallurgy from the University of Queensland in the late 1960s, his career began in the early 1970s as a wellsite geologist for Mines Administration Pty Ltd and then with Marathon Petroleum Pty Ltd in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Cooper-Eromanga Basin: New Exploration Areas Awarded

On January 29, the Queensland Government announced the appointment of Santos QNT Pty Ltd and Drillsearch Energy Pty Ltd (a 100% subsidiary of Beach Energy) as preferred tenderers for three new gas exploration areas in the Cooper-Eromanga Basins, aimed at boosting supply, reducing energy prices, and supporting regional jobs.

Both Santos and Drillsearch (Beach) have a strong track record of exploration and delivery in the Cooper-Eromanga Basins. Santos holds a dominant and long-standing tenure position in the basin operating the South Australian Cooper Basin Joint Venture (SACBJV) with partners Beach Energy.
