Curtin Geoscientists and Engineers Club (CGEC) and Curtin Energy Society (CES) came together on Wednesday, 12th August, to host a networking night for students at Curtin University, supported by the PESA WA Branch. The event commenced with an introduction from PESA Curtin Student Representative and PhD Candidate at Curtin University, Princy Agrahari, in the presence of Adam Craig, Vice President of PESA WA.
The evening featured three technical talks from industry professionals. Martin Wilkes, Managing Director at RISC, spoke on the current status of the energy transition, concluding that achieving net zero will likely require significant changes in consumer behavior, and that the industry is still charting its path forward. Rosie Johnstone, Chair at CCUS Network Australia, gave an overview of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in Australia, covering the geological processes behind carbon storage and outlining the range of career opportunities available within the CCUS sector. Pablo Crespo Carrillo, Geophysicist at Mineral Resources Limited, discussed the diverse career pathways within the oil and gas industry, offering an optimistic outlook and encouraging students to explore the many directions available to them. The technical sessions concluded with an engaging Q&A session, followed by closing remarks from Adam Craig, who kindly explained the PESA student membership process and encouraged students to get involved with PESA.
The evening drew more than 50 attendees and was followed by networking, food, and drinks at the Curtin Tavern, sponsored by PESA. Beyond the technical insights shared, the event provided students with valuable opportunities to network with industry professionals and peers, while also fostering teamwork and collaboration skills through the joint efforts of CGEC, CES, and PESA in organizing the event.
