Geological Survey of WA releases Geoscience Plan and Strategy Update

The Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration has released the Geological Survey of WA’s Five-Year Geoscience Plan and Geoscience Strategy Update 2026–31.

Together, these documents outline a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape Western Australia’s transition to a diversified, low-carbon economy, while strengthening the long-term exploration ecosystem by supporting the infrastructure, expertise and services required to deliver high-quality pre-competitive geoscience.

The Plan provides an overview of GSWA’s work program, which will evolve as new data, technologies and scientific insights become available.

PESA SA/NT shook up their usual luncheon format, replacing the customary single speaker with a panel of four experts to broaden the conversation and connect perspectives from across the sector.

The brief was simple: bring together voices from industry, government, and academia, and explore what each sees as the opportunities, challenges, and future directions for the petroleum sector. Drawing on decades of combined experience, each panellist shared a short presentation on a topic of their choosing.

Leslie Atkinson was up first and took us through Bass Oil’s exciting Triassic exploration opportunities in the Cooper Basin.

Eastern Gas reports strong gas shows from Venus-2H

Eastern Gas Corporation has reported strong gas shows from its Venus-2H horizontal appraisal well at the 100%-owned Project Venus in Queensland’s Surat Basin.

The well reached a total depth of 1,450 metres measured depth and successfully intersected the existing Venus-1 vertical wellbore at approximately 927 metres measured depth. The completed wellbore intersected 445 metres of interpreted net Macalister Lower target coal, with total gas readings peaking at 42.3%.

Eastern Gas is now preparing the integrated Venus-2H/Venus-1 well system for dewatering and flow testing to assess gas deliverability and overall well productivity.

First gas from the Beetaloo Basin today marks a major milestone for Australia’s energy security and the Northern Territory economy.

The start of production from Tamboran’s Shenandoah South development is the culmination of years of exploration, investment and rigorous assessment and provides a glimpse of what larger-scale development of the basin could deliver.

Australian Energy Producers Chief Executive Samantha McCulloch said the Beetaloo was a globally significant resource that had the potential to attract billions of dollars of investment, create thousands of jobs and generate new opportunities for local businesses, contractors and regional communities.

Amplitude Energy Spud Juliet-1, offshore Victoria

On August 24, Amplitude Energy announced they had commenced drilling Juliet-1 in Victoria waters, targeting 48.8 Bcf prospective gas resource with an 84% success probability. The well, in joint venture with O.G. Energy, aims to evaluate gas quality and potential development, with results expected in 20-25 days.

Juliet-1 is an exploration well located in permit VIC/L24 within Commonwealth waters, adjacent to the existing Casino, Henry, Netherby (CHN) pipeline.

The Juliet prospect is supported by high Waarre C reservoir amplitudes, and a clear ‘flat spot’ at approximately 2,300m True Vertical Depth Sub-Sea (TVDSS) implying gas-water contact, both of which contribute to a probability of geological success of 84% (as reported by Amplitude Energy).
