PESA-ASEG-SPE YP Networking Night, held on Friday, 28th March 2025 at The Shoe Bar

The PESA-ASEG-SPE YP Networking Night, held on Friday, 28th March 2025, provided a unique opportunity for young professionals to connect with experienced industry leaders. The event featured three distinguished speakers: Steve Molyneux, a consultant geologist at Hancock Energy, Sam Howman, Director at Howman Seismic Services, and Lina Hartanto, Subsurface Technical Advisory Group Lead at Chevron. Each speaker delivered a candid 5–10-minute career overview, sharing their personal journeys, the highlights and lowlights of their careers, and the valuable lessons learned along the way. They discussed the significant role their PhDs played in shaping their expertise, particularly the technical and problem-solving skills they developed, which proved invaluable when transitioning into the industry.

The speakers reflected on some of their most interesting and challenging projects, providing real-world examples of the complexities they encountered. They also explored the skills honed during their doctoral studies that helped them succeed in their current roles, such as critical thinking, research methodologies, and technical proficiency. The transition from academia to industry was another key topic, with each speaker offering personal anecdotes and advice for students preparing to make this shift. Their insights emphasized the importance of adaptability, networking, and the need for a practical mindset when entering the professional world, leaving attendees with actionable guidance for their own career paths.
