The PESA SA/NT Branch welcomed Trevor Brown and Nathan Parker to give 36 members an update on Omega’s activity in the Taroom Trough, onshore Queensland.
Trevor introduced the company and gave an overview of the geology of the Bowen Basin, and this was followed by Nathan giving a very interesting history of the oil and gas industry in the region which started in the late 1800s. Trevor returned to discuss Omega’s recent activity, in particular the successful re-entry of Canyon-1 to drill horizontally into the relatively tight Permian Canyon Sandstone reservoir, followed by multi-stage fracture stimulation which resulted in unexpected flows of light oil as well as gas.
This program was so successful that Omega is now planning to drill up to 6 wells in the Taroom Trough towards the end of 2026. The talk was followed by lots of questions from an engaged audience. The SA/NT Branch thanks Trevor and Nathan for visiting Adelaide to present such an interesting story, which is particularly timely given the current oil crisis.
