Peter Hoiles – PESA Webinar Coordinator

Running into its sixth year, the PESA Webinar Series has returned for 2025.  Generally run every second Tuesday of the month from February to about November, the series offers members from all states and territories the opportunity to hear updates, challenges, stories and field examples from Australia and across the world.

The series kicked off for 2025 on Tuesday the 4th of February, with a talk by Donald Christie from Fugro.  In this webinar, Donald presented the results of a study about forward modelling for stratigraphic and structural analysis in complex mini-basins, with a particular focus on the offshore Sureste Basin in Mexico. Donald discussed how structurally active mini-basins characterize continental margins such as deep-water Angola, Brazil, North Borneo and the Gulf of Mexico and that the stratal architecture of these mini-basins is dominantly controlled by the interplay of structural growth and sediment supply.

The next webinar will be held on Tuesday the 18th of February and will be given by Mark Lisk from Ascendience Geoscience.  Mark, to coincide with the soon to be launched Ascendience Geoscience global field analogue database, will discuss the power of geological analogues using examples of unusual oil and gas discoveries from around the world.  The title of this webinar will be “The God’s Must Be Crazy – Unbelievable Play Defining Discoveries Providing Analogues for Future Success”.  As usual, registrations for this and upcoming webinars can be found on the PESA website.

Planning is now underway for March and beyond, with a call for speakers now out to the membership and beyond.  If you think you might like to present at an upcoming webinar, or perhaps you have an idea about a particular topic you would like to hear about, or if you know of someone who might be interested in giving a webinar, please send an email to webinars@pesa.com.au

In other webinar news, PESA is working on preparing a Webinar Library where members can view all of the recorded webinar videos.  Work is ongoing to create the Webinar Library, with further information coming soon.
