The Queensland branch technical meeting for May was a presentation from Brendon Mitchell, Chief Geophysisct and Managing Director of Oceania Geo. PESA Queensland were pleased to welcome members of the Queensland ASEG branch to the event to hear about the challenges of seismic acquisition in New Zealand, during covid.
Brendon has significant experience working across New Zealand and Australia, with a focus on onshore data acquisition for unconventional and tight gas exploration and development. His talk focussed on seismic data acquisition in the Taranaki region and highlighted some of the diverse challenges of this rugged landscape, quite different to the operating areas a lot of the audience were familiar with.

He highlighted the benefits that had been gained through rapid deployment of emerging technology, with the use of modern lightweight nodal receivers improving the data density within the survey area whilst also minimising the environmental impact. Passing an example nodal receiver round the audience, it was easy to see how these light weight devices could be a game changer being easy to hand carry and deploy through the survey-area terrain.
Over a delicious lunch at the Post Office Hotel, there was some excellent discussion following the talk. Especially about the environmental impact of different seismic sources, with the vibroseis trucks leaving a bigger footprint in this case compared to more traditional dynamite charges giving the audience a lot to think about when planning future surveys.
