The Port of Hamburg is cooperating with the world’s largest hydrogen producer to expand comprehensive hydrogen value chain.

The Hamburg Port Authority said in a media release that it would work with Air Products under a Memorandum of Understanding to identify potential ways of establishing a comprehensive hydrogen value chain across the port of Hamburg and accelerate the production, supply chain and consumption of hydrogen in the North of Germany and Free Hanseatic State of Hamburg. In collaboration, both parties are focused on identifying real opportunities that would support the stimulation of hydrogen demand and subsequent decarbonisation of heavy-duty vehicles (including port logistics) and industry.

Kurt Lefevere, (Vice President of Air Products for Northern Continent), Michael Westhagemann (Hamburg’s Minister for Economy and Innovation), Jens Meier (CEO Hamburg Port Authority), Stephan König (Air Products Director Operations and Supply Chain Performance Europe and Africa)

Michael Westhagemann, Hamburg’s Senator for Economics and Innovation, said: “The interest of Air Products underlines the potential of the Port of Hamburg with regards to the development of a hydrogen infrastructure. I am very pleased that Air Products, with its global hydrogen expertise, is partnering with the Port of Hamburg in establishing a sustainable supply chain for hydrogen. This is an important part in Hamburg’s portfolio on the way to a climate-neutral port.“

Jens Meier, CEO Hamburg Port Authority, commented: “The HPA is committed to future-proof and innovative technologies and their use in the port, thus supporting decarbonization and the City of Hamburg’s Clean Air Plan. This MoU is a further step on our way to taking concrete action here.”

“Ports and their industrial clusters in Hamburg and around the world, have a critical role to play in expanding hydrogen’s role in the energy transition,” commented Kurt Lefevere, Vice-President Northern Continent at Air Products, “We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with the Hamburg Port Authority, sharing our proven knowledge and experience across the entire hydrogen supply chain and identifying opportunities to help them on their sustainability journey and support Germany’s ambitious decarbonisation agenda.”

As the world’s largest hydrogen producer with more than 60 years of global hydrogen experience in over 50 countries, Air Products has practical operational experience from more than 250 refuelling station projects in 20 countries. Air Products’ technologies are used in over 1.5 million refuelling operations annually. The company has been supplying hydrogen to the port of Hamburg and Germany for over 40 years, it is a member of H2 Global and already supplies many hydrogen fuel stations across Germany, including a new hydrogen refuelling station, opening later this year.
