PESA Queensland were delighted to welcome Mark Casey from Senex Energy to speak at the October technical meeting.
Mark Casey is the Development Manager at Senex Energy, responsible for Cooper Basin developments. He has over 15 years of experience in Australia, UK and Denmark primarily focused on field development and reservoir management in clastic, carbonate and CSG reservoirs. Mark started his career in the Cooper Basin and Queensland CSG assets working for Santos, before heading to Europe where he worked with Talisman Energy and Maersk Oil, primarily on their North Sea assets.
The presentation focussed on the recently drilled and completed Growler 15 – the company’s first foray into horizontal drilling in the Jurassic Birkhead Formation, on the Cooper Basin Western Flank. He spoke about the multiple technical challenges the well faced, including: sweep, depletion and multiple subsurface targets. The multi-disciplinary team worked through an extensive planning phase and an intense execution period including geo-steering to successfully place the well. Following the success of this well, the further application of horizontal wells in the area was discussed.
The 50-strong audience enjoyed the technical presentation and discussions afterwards focussed on the geomechanical inputs to well planning, the cost benefits of horizontal wells as a development strategy and the ultimate recovery from this type of well.
Thanks again to our speaker Mark Casey for his excellent presentation.
