The last of the technical evenings talks was given by Anthony Gartrell, an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia, on November 24 at the Mantra Hotel. Anthony has over 20 years of experience as a petroleum geologist working for WMC, CSIRO and Shell Brunei and Australia offices before he became an independent consultant geologist in 2013. Anthony shared with the WA Branch members his views on “controls on sequence stratigraphic architecture using examples from NW Borneo and the NW Shelf”. It was a great turn up with 70 people attending the talk.

PESA students explore the Core
[caption id="attachment_51183" align="alignnone" width="350"] SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES[/caption] PESA WA organised the first student core workshop on the 21st of October 2016 at the DMP Core library, with the aim of providing the opportunity to PESA student members to view, learn, discuss and familiarise themselves with sequence stratigraphy and core logging, writes Marlene Woligroski. This event was planned and coordinated by students from Curtin University (Victoria Seesaha and Jordan McGlew) and University of Western Australia (Matus Kovac and David Hu), through the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Curtin Student Chapter and the PESA UWA Student Chapter.

The two-day workshop, conducted on September 29-30, was presented by Robert Seggie (Woodside), Dr. Simon Lang (Chevron), Bruce Ainsworth (Chevron), Prof. Peter McCab (University of Adelaide) and Dr. Amely Allgoewe (MGPalaeo). A total of 38 people had registered to follow the course, comprising a majority of geologists and geophysicists, and a few reservoir engineers.

PESA WA Branch – 2016 Meritorious Service Award
This year the WA Branch is proud to announce that four members have been awarded the Meritorious Services Awards (MSA) for their contributions to Western Australian Basins Symposium (WABS). Their efforts are reflected in a series of volumes that capture geological features of hydrocarbons findings in WA as well geological concepts currently used for exploration in WA basins. The recipients of this year's PESA MSA are Dr Myra Keep, Dr Don Poynton, Ed Kopsen and Dr Steve Moss.

36th PESA Symposium
PESA QLD/NT members and non-members are invited to the 36th PESA Symposium, to be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Wednesday 7th September 2016. The QLD PESA branch has been actively promoting exploration, production and development of oil and gas through these symposia and its monthly technical meetings since 1977. Much has changed since our debut, but our purpose has remained the same; namely attracting explorers and developers into the northern states to meet the demand for clean, competitive energy.
