PESA are delighted to announce the winner of the 2025 Horstman Federal Postgraduate Scholarship is Aike Albers.
Aike is a PhD candidate in the School of Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences at the University of Adelaide, where he investigates the feasibility of permanent CO₂ sequestration in buried mafic (basaltic) reservoirs as part of Australia’s energy transition. His research integrates seismic interpretation, petrophysical and geochemical analysis, and reservoir simulation to assess carbon mineralisation potential in volcanic systems, with a particular focus on the Bass Basin. Through his PhD, Aike aims to develop a transferable workflow for screening basalt-hosted carbon storage sites, supporting the safe and permanent sequestration of CO₂ in Australia and globally.
Prior to commencing his PhD, Aike completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Geosciences at the University of Bremen, Germany, and subsequently worked there as a research geoscientist from 2023 to 2025. His background spans marine geology and geophysics, including participation in multiple international research expeditions focused on subsurface characterisation and carbon storage potential. In 2023, he also completed a research internship with CSIRO in Perth, contributing to basin-scale studies relevant to critical minerals and energy exploration.
