Guest Speaker(s): Alan Fernie

Alan graduated from St Andrews University in Scotland with a BSc. in Physics. He is an experienced geoscientist with global technical experience and commercial and management skills acquired in senior positions in a range of E&P operating company roles. In a career spanning 46 years so far, Alan started with BP in 1975 in the North Sea. He had 14 years in various provinces with BP, then worked with Sun International, Ampolex, Santos, RISC and Horizon Oil in the UK/Europe, Middle East, China, South America, Australia/NZ/PNG and SE Asia on several successful exploration and development projects. Alan continues to work in the exploration business as a consultant. Over the years Alan has developed detailed knowledge of the global E&P business, including the characteristics of many major hydrocarbon provinces, the companies and players and the ways and means to conduct successful business at a senior level. He has been involved in finding large oil and gas reserves and in identifying and capturing many business development opportunities.

Quo Vadis Exploration?

Presented by: Alan Fernie

Abstract:

The Energy Transition is under way and the fuel mix will change to reduce the relative contribution
of combustible hydrocarbons. The question is how fast, to what degree, and what are the
implications for the Oil and Gas exploration business? Possible transition scenarios and forecasts are
widely different in relation to the hydrocarbon question. Industry and Governments need to take a
view and appropriate action to ensure energy security and an orderly transition. Let’s take a look at
the landscape and activity, and extrapolate what might be needed. Interesting recent activity
suggests exploration is by no means dead.
