The Late Carboniferous–Triassic Cooper Basin is Australia’s main onshore petroleum province spanning an area of 153,000 km2. The basin was located in the continental interior of eastern Gondwana at high latitudes (70°S) when the supercontinent Pangea was in its final stage of assembly. From the Late Carboniferous through to the middle Permian – a time known as the late Paleozoic ice age (LPIA) – ice sheets spanned most of southern Australia including the Cooper Basin.
