Guest Speaker(s): Dr Grazia Gargiulo & Dr Julie Pearce

Dr Grazia Gargiulo, Terra Sana Consultants Dr Grazia Gargiulo is a consultant with more than 15 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry. Grazia specialises in gas risk assessment including compliance and legal investigations, transport of contaminants in gaseous system, and gas safety in the Coal Seam Gas (CSG) industry. Grazia’s experience includes working with and for international research centers and universities, international consulting firms and state government agencies. With this strong background of experience, Grazia decided to commence her journey to shape the future of the industry in Australia founding Terra Sana Consultants, an environment, health and safety consulting firm that focuses on innovative solutions for the oil and gas industry.   Dr Julie Pearce, University of Queensland Centre for Natural Gas, and School of Earth and Environmental Sciences Dr Julie Pearce is a geochemist with international experience in the UK, Japan, and Australia on interdisciplinary projects.  She is currently a Research Fellow with the University of Queensland Centre for Natural Gas, and School of Earth and Environmental Sciences.  Pearce has worked with the CO2CRC and ANLEC R&D to understand the potential impacts of CO2 storage.  Pearce is an expert on gas-water-rock interactions with a focus on the Surat Basin, QLD, Australia. She is additionally working on field monitoring techniques for measurement of methane and understanding its sources through isotopic techniques, and additionally geochemical processes in gas and oil shale.  Pearce has published 40 articles in peer reviewed international journals, including three in the top 3% cited for the field of geochemistry.  She has collaborated in research projects with Dirk Kirste, SFU, Canada, Arrow Energy, Origin, Santos, CTSCo Pty Ltd, and provided expert opinion to the Queensland Government.  Pearce has secured over $ 4.8 million in nationally and internationally competitive funding.

Presentation Abstract:

Quantification of Gas in Groundwater

Baseline bore assessments suggest the use of a gas stripper or separator, or filling an inverted container in a bucket to measure gases such as methane, referring to documentation from 13+ years ago.  Current standard bore monitoring however often tends to involve the simple filling of a vial container with water, with the methane extracted in the lab for measurement.  However akin to opening a can of coke, dissolved gases can desorb and escape to atmosphere when pumped from depth.

Gas and water samples were collected from coal seam gas (CSG) wells, and from aquifer and alluvium water bores in the Surat Basin.  We collected samples for methane concentrations with three methods in the field: vials, IsoFlasks, and the Terra Sana gas-water separator.  We found that the currently used “open” vial sampling method may lose gases to atmosphere and be underestimating gas concentrations especially in gassy bores.

In addition, stable isotopes of gases and waters, and other isotopic tracers were measured to understand sources of methane.  The majority of the sampled water bores had methane, CO2 and water stable isotopic signatures distinct from CSG wells, suggesting methane was produced in-situ. However, a minority of samples from gassy bores could not be clearly distinguished from CSG signatures, and methane migration could not be ruled out.
