Biography –
Dr Steve Mackie has ~45 years’ experience in the upstream petroleum industry functioning in both regional and field specific geoscience and engineering. As well as running his own successful consultancy he has worked for multinationals and local explorers in both senior technical and executive roles.
He holds a BSc (Macquarie), MBA (Uni SA) and PhD (Adelaide).
He serves as:
• Chairman of the Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia (PESA)
• Associate Professor (adjunct) at the Australian School of Petroleum and Energy Resources, University of Adelaide
• Chairman of the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA) Technical Program Committee
• Editor of the APPEA Journal
• Distinguished Lecturer for Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE)
He is an honorary life member of APPEA; a distinguished life member of PESA, a member of the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) and SPE.
Making Good Decisions in an Uncertain World – Can we Do It?

Abstract
Business under-performance in the upstream oil and gas industry, and the failure of many decisions to return anticipated results would say the answer to the question is “no!” But by comparing and contrasting a theoretical decision-making model (how people should make decisions) with a “real world” decision-making model (how people in the oil and gas industry do make decisions) to develop a prescriptive list of how to improve the quality of decisions in practice, specifically as it applies in the upstream oil and gas industry, indicates the answer is …… “possibly yes!”
