Abstract:
In a single remarkable year, several key papers and books were published that revolutionised the petroleum geosciences.
Some of these publications introduced groundbreaking ideas, concepts, and methodologies that stunned and astonished both academia and the petroleum industry. Others synthesised state of the art in disciplines such as sedimentology and geochemistry, building on developments from the previous decades, like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle falling into place; these works not only led to a more innovative approach to petroleum exploration but also laid the foundations for systematic basin analysis, play analysis, petroleum systems analysis, and risk analysis – approaches that would emerge as essential tools for the petroleum industry in the 1980/90s and beyond.
What were these pivotal publications, and who were their authors? How and where did these ideas and breakthroughs originate, and how were they received by both academia and the industry?
Rhodri Johns will tell this story from a personal perspective, offering new insights from those closer to the action.
