PESA SA/NT November Luncheon : PESA Distinguished Lecturer

Monday, 3 November @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm (Australia/Adelaide time)
Free – $75.00

Guest Speaker(s): Henry Posamentier

Henry Posamentier is known for his pioneering work in developing the contemporary approach to sequence stratigraphic analyses, integrating sedimentology, stratigraphy, and depositional systems analysis, primarily in the context of oil and gas exploration. He has also been instrumental in pioneering the study of seismic stratigraphy/geomorphology in order to maximize the extraction of geologic information contained within seismic data. With a career spanning over 50 years at companies including Exxon, ARCO, Veritas, Anadarko, and Chevron, Henry now serves as a global geological and geophysical consultant to companies engaged in petroleum exploration and development. His expertise covers most of the significant onshore and offshore sedimentary basins worldwide, and he has edited 10 books and authored over 200 publications in leading international journals. He has conducted numerous in-house and public courses on topics including sequence stratigraphy, seismic stratigraphy/geomorphology, and 3D seismic visualization. As a recognized expert, he has delivered lectures at more than 100 companies and universities across North America and globally.

His technical skills have earned him various professional accolades and awards. In 1971-1972, Dr. Posamentier was a Fulbright Fellow to Austria. Subsequently, he has served as an AAPG Distinguished Lecturer to the United States (1991-1992), an AAPG Distinguished Lecturer to the former Soviet Union (1996-1997), an AAPG Distinguished Lecturer to the Middle East (1998-1999), and an AAPG Distinguished Lecturer to Europe (2005-2006). He was awarded the Pettijohn Medal for excellence in sedimentology from the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM) In 2008, the William Smith Medal for contributions to applied and economic aspects of geology from the Geological Society of London in 2010, and the Robert Berg Award for Outstanding Petroleum Research from the AAPG in 2012.

Recent applications of seismic geomorphology/stratigraphy: Deep-water deposits of the Bay of Bengal and the Norwegian Sea

Henry Posamentier

(PESA Distinguished Lecturer)

Abstract:

This presentation will document the seismic stratigraphic and seismic geomorphologic expressions of deep-water deposits of the Bay of Bengal and the Norwegian Sea. They comprise both turbidites as well as mass transport deposits. The turbidite deposits from the Bay of Bengal include leveed channel complexes, terminal fans, and overbank sediment waves. With respect to terminal fans, there are those that terminate basinward of leveed channel systems and are relatively large, and those that are deposited late within a lowstand cycle of deposition and are confined between the levees of precursor larger channels, and are relatively small. Intra-basinal channels (i.e., channels that start and end on the basin floor) are observed within abandoned meander loops as well as interchannel overbank terrains. These intra-basinal channels are characterized by low sinuosity and likely are mud-filled with no exploration potential.

Mass transport deposits from the Norwegian Sea include flows, slumps, and slides, as well as isolated outrunner blocks. These deposits are associated with significant substate erosion up to 250m. The outrunner blocks are observed in clusters, generally in radiating patterns down-system. Some of the outrunner blocks at the termini of erosional furrows are associated with sediment tails orthogonal to the direction of transport, indicating bottom current direction from southwest to northeast. In addition, volcanic intrusive deposits will be documented. These intrusives comprise both dikes and sills. Some of the dikes are associated with laccoliths in the shallower section.

This PESA Distinguished Lecture is made possible with the generous support of Santos Ltd.
