Abstract:
Results of detailed wire-line log correlations have enabled a uniform stratigraphic framework for the Jurassic-Early Cretaceous sequence in the Eromanga Basin in southern Queensland to be established. The broad regional pattern of basin development was assessed using isopach, structure contour and v-shale maps. Interrelating the above with the present stratigraphic and areal distribution patterns of hydrocarbon accumulations has resulted in a better understanding of the influence of stratigraphy and facies on these accumulations. Assessment of the stratigraphic distribution of these hydrocarbon accumulations provides data necessary for the development of exploration models based on stratigraphic variations. The hydrocarbon accumulations within the Birkhead Formation and older intervals appear to have been influenced by the thinning, of these units onto pre-Eromanga basement, whereas facies' changes seem to have controlled the accumulation of hydrocarbons in the younger intervals.
