For the 2022 edition of the Student SSIG meeting, we’ll be heading north of Perth to the northern Perth Basin where we will look at the clastic succession through the Permian and Early Triassic.
Starting with the gas-bearing High Cliff Sst and Kingia Fm in Waitsia-2, we’ll move from near-shore deposition into a lovely set of oil-bearing fluvial sands from the Irwin River Coal Measures in Cliff Head-6. Then we skip past the middle Permian unconformity into the Late Permian marine sands of the Wagina and Dongara sandstones in Hovea-3 where we see the changes in sedimentary features as we move closer and closer to the shoreline before we hit the Permo-Triassic boundary and pause for a moment to remember the 95% of all species of the time that perished then. Moving up from the extinction event we get to see the regional seal and oil-prone source rock of the Kockatea Shale. We’ll finish off with a wonderful shallow marine tidally dominated sequence in the middle of the Kockatea Shale from Dongara-24, which has more sedimentary features than a new carpet trampled by a troupe of field geologists on a rainy day.
Don’t forget to book early as we have a hard limit of 20 attendees. Note this event is only open to PESA members. Not yet a member? Not a problem, membership is free for students, so just register here prior to booking your ticket. You need to be logged in as a member to be able to see the ticket booking facility at the bottom of this page. Tickets are free, but booking is essential.
