Tuesday, 14 November, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (Australia/Perth time)

Free – $50.00

Guest Speaker(s): Kirsta Davies

Krista Davies, a seasoned Geoscientist with over 25 years of experience, is a leading expert in Natural Hydrogen and Oil and Gas Exploration. Her passion lies in addressing global resource and environmental challenges through practical and sustainable approaches.

As the Principal Geoscientist at Cryptid Energy Consultants, Krista has been at the forefront of geological and geophysical consulting for the energy industry, working for small caps and multi-national companies throughout South East Asia. Krista’s career also includes significant contributions at Ophir Energy, Shell Development Australia, and Woodside Energy, where she specialised in sequence stratigraphy, seismic interpretation and prospect generation both onshore and offshore.

Krista holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Geology with First Class Honours, a Masters Degree in Environmental Science specialising in Inland Aquatic and Marine Systems, and is currently undertaking her PhD research in Hydrogen Subsurface Geochemistry at the School of Engineering, Centre for Energy and Sustainable Resources at Edith Cowan University.

Natural Hydrogen Exploration: Applying Familiar Tools in New Ways

Krista Davies: Edith Cowan University, School of Engineering, Centre for Sustainable Energy Resources

The field of natural hydrogen exploration is currently experiencing a surge in global interest, with a notable focus on Australia, where recent legislative changes have created opportunities for exploration initiatives. But how can we effectively pursue this non-petroleum gas resource?

In recent years, the international dialogue has revolved around the concepts of play fairway mapping and soil gas sampling. However, the path to harnessing natural hydrogen is not as straightforward as merely marking serpentinites on a map, assembling drilling equipment, and venturing into the field. It’s important to acknowledge that natural hydrogen exploration presents distinct challenges that differ from conventional petroleum exploration, necessitating tailored methodological adjustments.

The complex chemical interactions between hydrogen, water, and minerals within rocks are contingent upon various factors, including the original mineral composition, temperature, pressure, salinity and the redox conditions of the system.

During this presentation, we will delve into a selection of emerging techniques spanning fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and desktop methodologies that are currently being developed within the natural hydrogen industry. Many of these techniques share common ground with established practices in oil and gas exploration, enabling a seamless and practical adaptation to the unique demands of natural hydrogen.

In light of the escalating importance of sustainable energy sources, the exploration of natural hydrogen via the refinement of petroleum techniques assumes a pivotal role in safeguarding our future energy security. Our research underscores the significance of an efficient and pragmatic approach to unlocking the potential of natural hydrogen. With ongoing research and development, natural hydrogen has the potential to evolve into a critical and dependable contributor to the clean energy mix.
