The large-scale capture and storage of carbon dioxide is a critical component of the route to achieving Net Zero. However, CCUS technologies are still in their infancy. The IEA calculated worldwide storage-rates in 2021 of approximately 40 Mt of CO2 per year but this needs to be upscaled to 7.6Gt of CO2 per year by 2050. Phil will review the pathway to gigatonne-scale CO2 storage and present details from a case study on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
