Abstract:

Reliable reconstruction of thermal histories in sedimentary basins is a key aspect of reducing exploration risk, e.g. In defining the timing of hydrocarbon generation in source kitchens and identifying tectonic episodes which may have caused disruption of accumulations. Experience to date suggests that the novel technique of (U-Th)/He dating, when integrated with AFTA and VR data, can provide improved constraints on thermal histories in edimentary basins, particularly in constraining rates of cooling and/or resolution of multiple events. The Taranaki basin, located in central-western New Zealand, contains a predominantly ten?igenous Late Cretaceous to Holocene ten?estrial to marine succession, with an estimated maximum thickness of -8 km. This basin is of particular interest because it provides most of New Zealand's commercial hydrocarbon discoveries.
