Josh Sage, Beach Energy
Following the transformational acquisition of Lattice Energy 2017, Beach Energy materially increased its footprint in the Otway Basin, picking up several near shore and offshore tenements, including two producing offshore gas fields, Geographe and Thylacine, as well as several promising exploration targets.
In 2022, to capitalise on the potential of these new assets, Beach Energy completed the largest exploration and development campaign in the Offshore Otway basin’s history. The successful campaign included one new gas discovery at the Artisan Field and six successful development wells in the Geographe and Thylacine fields.
Against the challenging backdrop of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and with over 820,000 continuous operational hours through the pandemic, the campaign concluded 18 months after commencement with some very notable achievements. These include, but are certainly not limited to, the first offshore ERD well drilled by Beach, the longest horizontal well drilled in the Otway Basin (3.5 km lateral section in Thylacine North 2) and the longest horizontal campaign in the Otway Basin (8.1 km total lateral section from three horizontal wells).
This presentation will be a recap of the 2021-2022 Offshore Otway project; the goals, the execution, the challenges along the way, and some of the great & more interesting results.
