Abstract:
Detailed analysis of fully cored sections from exploration wells drilled by Western Mining Corporation on the Barbwire Terrace has allowed a better understanding of the sedimentology and depositional history of the Permo-Carboniferous Grant Group. However, correlation from the Barbwire Terrace to the previously defined type sections for the Grant Group, located mainly in the Fitzroy Graben, proved to be difficult. To overcome this problem a preliminary stratigraphic framework was established on the Barbwire Terrace (Redfern, 1990) comprising three new formations, defined from the fully cored boreholes integrated with wireline log and seismic data.Ongoing research into the Grant Group section within the adjacent Willara Basin and Dampier Terrace is attempting to expand this stratigraphic framework. Initial results suggest that the three formations defined from the Barbwire Terace can be widely correlated, but that they represent only the upper part of a much thicker section preserved in the adjacent troughs. A lower Grant Group has been identified, which can be divided into a further three or four regionally correlatable units.
