Abstract:

A new stratigraphic framework of the Triassic system in the Carnarvon Basin, established using new conodont
biostratigraphy, allows a more precise correlation of sea level events to the global chronostratigraphic schemes
than is available using palynology. Thirteen depositional sequences have been delineated, and two new formations, the Sholl Formation and Cunaloo Formation, are proposed.
The recognition of multiple Type 1 sequence boundaries indicates that the depositional history of the North West Shelf is not a simple picture of basal Triassic transgression and subsequent regression: global sea level events have influenced the depositional style and facies architecture throughout the period. These eustatic events may have played a role in the development of sandstone reservoirs and source beds in a proto-Dampier Sub-basin. Structural movements, particularly along the Flinders Fault, led to the elevation of the eastern shelfal area and the incision of deep canyons during sea level falls.
