Abstract:
The Western Australian Petroleum Information Management System (WAPIMS) is a major new relational petroleum database created by the Department of Minerals and Energy, Western Australia (DME) to serve the current and future requirements of the petroleum industry. WAPIMS was conceived following extensive liaison between industry and government that highlighted the need for easy access to the vast store of basic and interpretative petroleum exploration data held in the public domain.The principal design criteria for WAPIMS include:
? capture and conversion of hard copy and digital data to digital format;
? secure digital data storage;
? comprehensive compilation of physical assets;
? fully relational search and query capability;
? adaptability of data storage and maintenance to advancing technology;
? workstation compatibility.
WAPIMS consists of highly detailed biostratigraphic, geochemical, petrophysical, and geophysical datasets sourced from well completion and other reports for exploration, extension, and stratigraphic wells drilled in Western Australia. In addition, comprehensive metadata for permits, surveys, wells and general studies has been captured and can be searched
Well summary packages have been published for the Bonaparte, Bremer, Browse, Canning, Eucla, Officer and Perth basins. The Carnarvon Basin well summary package will be released in stages during 1998-99 according to gazetted areas and tectonic units. Other database publications include geochemical and petrophysical datasets for particular geographic areas and stratigraphic intervals.
Although WAPIMS currently can only be accessed by DME personnel industry can obtain data by request. Future on-line availability is planned.
