Abstract:

A palynological review of relevant sections of eleven wells from the Beagle and Dampier sub-basins was carried out to date the Seismic Horizons D, E and F, recognised in and around the Exmouth Plateau. Horizon F is dated as Rhaetian and is overlain by Early Jurassic sediments. Horizon E is dated as Callovian and is coincident with the Main Unconformity marking the break-up of Gondwanaland. It is overlain by Valanginian-Hauterivian sediments in the Dampier Sub-basin and by Oxfordian-Tithonian sediments in the Beagle Sub-basin. An unconformity at the top of the Oxfordian-Tithonian sequence is considered a "component" of Horizon E and informally called "False
Horizon E." This unconformity is overlain by Valanginian-Hauterivian sediments. "False Horizon E" is absent from the study area of the Dampier Sub-basin but is, nevertheless, widespread on the North West Shelf. Horizon D is dated as Hauterivian and is overlain by Albian sediments. Horizons D and E are coincident on the De Grey Nose and conformable in Legendre-1. Horizon F is conformable in Delambre-1 and Sable-1.
