Abstract:

Exploration permit NT/P40, operated by Western Mining Corporation Limited (WM C), is situated in the north-eastern Bonaparte Basin.
Early seismic exploration failed to delineate the primary objective section because of its significant depth of burial, the complex seismic response to the overlying geological section, and the complications arising from water-bottom irregularities. A better understanding of the seismic response has resulted in an improved exploration strategy. Deployment of "state-of-the-art" source and streamer technology has improved noise attenuation and signal penetration. Intensive processing directed, in particular, towards multiple attenuation, coherent noise reduction and fault resolution has improved seismic data. Interpretive techniques have acilitated the correction of apparent structuring beneath water-bottom irregularities. This strategy has permitted the delineation of drilling targets at the objective levels.
