Abstract:
Several large gas fields and numerous small oil accumulations have been discovered within the northern Barrow-Dampier Sub-basin and along the Rankin Trend. The majority of these fields occur in Upper Triassic to lowermost Jurassic fluvial and marginal marine clastics within tilted fault blocks along the Rankin Trend. These fault blocks are truncated by a major erosional surface, the Main Unconformity, and usually overlain by Cretaceous claystones.Accumulations within this pre-Main Unconformity sequence include the North Rankin and Wilcox gas fields, the Dockrell, Goodwyn, Goodwyn South, Rankin and Tidepole oil and gas fields and the Eaglehawk oil field.
Hydrocarbon discoveries within the post-Main Unconformity sequence occur in marine sandstones of Late Jurassic to earliest Cretaceous age. These accumulations include the Angel and Dixon gas fields and the Egret, Lambert and Legendre oil fields. Traps within this sequence are usually drape features associated with listric faulting over pre-Main Unconformity highs. Legendre is an exception and is a faulted anticline formed by wrenching.
The North Rankin gas field is the only field to have been developed within this area. Development of the Goodwyn field is planned for the early 1990s.
