Abstract:
The offshore Canning Basin is located on Australia's North West Shelf. Northwest-trending Palaeozoic structures of the onshore Canning Basin extend into the offshore area, deepening to the northwest and buried under a seaward thickening wedge of Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments. This trend is abruptly terminated by the northeast-trending Jurassic faults. Two sub-basins are recognised: the Bedout Subbasin a Permo-Triassic depocentre, possibly related to the o~shore basin, and the Rowley Sub-basin, which contains up to 6000 m of Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments. The basins are separated by the Bedout High, apparently a remnant of the Palaeozoic basin:
The thirteen wells drilled in the Offshore Cannmg Basin have not encountered significant shows of oil and gas. Permian, Triassic and Jurassic sandstones are the potential reservoirs but the presence of adequate oilprone
mature source rocks is a major exploration risk.
