Abstract:

The diagenetic history of the Hutton Sandstone in the southern Eromanga Basin in Queensland has been investigated using petrological, fluid inclusion and stable isotope techniques. Three distinct diagenetic zones were recognised according to whether dissolution, quartz overgrowth or compaction was dominant. Porosity and permeability characteristics of each of these zones were also investigated. The values of these characteristics in the compaction zone are low and must influence present-day water flow paths and may also have influenced hydrocarbon migration paths. Assessment of the areal distribution of these zones was attempted using regional porosity trends determined from sonic wire-line logs run in petroleum exploration wells and stratigraphic bores. The low porosity compaction zone occupies most of the northern part of study area to the west of the Canaway Fault. Hydrocarbon accumulations are present solely within the overgrowth zone.
