Abstract:
Discoveries made in mid-1988 on the Taloola Trend in the Lake Hope Block marked a watershed for EromangaBasin oil exploration. The discoveries were made using an exploration model/play concept of sourcing from the
adjacent coaly Permian rocks of the Cooper Basin. The model proposed migration beyond the edge of Permian
seals into the Eromanga aquifer system where the physical and chemical properties of the migrating hydrocarbons were significantly modified by pressure and temperature induced fractionation and water washing.
Four fields were found - Taloola, Tantanna, Sturt and Sturt East - with oil accumulations in five stratigraphic
levels in the Eromanga Basin - Poolowanna, basal Hutton, top Hutton, Birkhead and top Namur Sandstones. The
total proved and probable oil place from these discoveries is estimated to be 2.21 kL (13.9 MMSTB).
