Abstract:
Current State and Federal Government policies raise the prospect of increasing Aboriginal control over accessto and mining on land in the Canning Basin and pose a significant and difficult challenge to the mining industry. The Western Australian Government has commissioned an Inquiry into the means of protecting Aboriginal relationships with land, the recommendations of which are to be incorporated in State land rights and heritage protection legislation. The Federal Government intends to introduce interim legislation for the protection of the heritage of Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders to be followed and replaced by comprehensive national land rights and heritage protection legislation. It remains to be seen whether the proposed State and Federal legislative packages are introduced and what their relationship, if any, to each other will be.
