Abstract:
WMC is the operator, on behalf of itself, Poseidon and Australian Hydrocarbons, of EPs 143 and 225 in the central Canning Basin. The area poses particular problems for seismic exploration including poor signal-to-noise ratio, great range of depth of objectives, and very irregular subsurface.
This led to the use of a thousand-channel acquisition system as soon as it became available. The system uses
sign-bit recording, which raises questions about fundamentals such as dynamic range. The system was used
for 2-D semi-detailing and reconnaissance.
This paper presents the evolution of WMC's field acquisition techniques with examples showing how recording
parameters affect reflection quality on single records. Some comparisons of stacked sections of 48-channel and 512-channel seismic are shown and production rates and economics are discussed.
