Abstract:
The Broome Platform is a major faulted basement ridge which separates the Fitzroy Trough and the southern Canning sub-basins. In the EP 175 area Ordovician basal sands, platform carbonates and shales rest on basement and are overlain by an undated evaporitic sequence. Widespread Early Devonian aeolian sands are succeeded by Late Devonian carbonates on the terraces adjacent to the Fitzroy Trough. Following considerable erosion, Permo-Carboniferous glacio-marine sediments were deposited and unconformably overlain by Late Jurassic sands. The platform has been a positive feature since the Early Ordovician, when the bounding faults were active, affecting sediment thicknesses and facies. Renewed uplift of the platform occurred during the Devonian. A major episode of structural development took place in the Late Triassic/Early Jurassic when the Broome Platform was arched up again, the Fitzroy Trough was downfaulted and wrench associated structures developed along the Collins Fault system.
Exploration objectives in EP 175 include Ordovician horst blocks, dip reversal at faults, salt related features and wrench structures. Reservoirs are known in the Ordovician, Devonian and Permian. Mature, oil-prone source rocks are present in the Ordovician section.
