Abstract:

The 'Geoseis' system is a surface energy source developed by ICI to suit Australian conditions. It provides an economic method of seismic prospecting and overcomes the problems associated with drilling techniques. Utilizing strands of 'Geoflex' or Redcord detonating cord, the 'Geoseis' system has many unique properties which include directional frequency filtering and horizontal noise cancellation.
In designing suitable field parameters the geophysicist must consider a combination of many factors and their effects on data quality. Factors such as charge length, charge mass, charge separation and charge spacing are all important in obtaining optimum results at the target horizon.
Many of the original principles that went into the development of the 'Geoseis' system have since been overlooked, and consequently practices with a deleterious effect on data quality have become commonplace. In particular the system by which the detonating cord is initiated today does not provide optimum data enhancement.
This paper uses basic wave theory to provide an understanding of the properties of 'Geoseis'. It then examines parameters and initiation systems and their effects on data quality. The study concludes with simple rules being put forward for the geophysicist to use in the design of optimum field parameters and initiation systems for maximum data enhancement.
