Abstract:
The Mesozoic and Tertiary sequences of the Gippsland, Bass and Otway Basins contain concentrations of non-petroleum gases, principally carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen sulphide and helium, ranging in purity from trace to 98.9 per cent. Normally these gases occur in association with gaseous and/or liquid petroleum, although pure carbon dioxide accumulations have been discovered. Only one is being commercially exploited - the Caroline field in the Otway Basin, South Australia.A review of geological and geochemical data from the three basins suggests that the origin and entrapment of the individual gases can be related to the nature of the sedimentary sequences, and in particular to depositional and post-depositional diagenetic processes, and/or to emanations from igneous rocks.
