PESA will award a $1,000 prize to the author of the best Honours, Masters or PhD thesis or research paper in 2024 on petroleum or related energy resource geosciences in SA Northern Territory.
Annual Student Prize
Every year, the South Australia Northern Territory Branch (SA-NT) of PESA (with support from the Northern Territory Government) gives out the NTGS / PESA SA-NT Student Prize for the best geoscience research paper or thesis. This prize is given to PESA student members undertaking research work on the petroleum or related energy resource industries within the territory.

Eligibility
Candidates must be members of PESA who are also current or recently enrolled tertiary education students.
Candidates may be of any nationality if enrolled at an Australian tertiary educational institution while undertaking their research. If a candidate undertakes the research overseas, he or she must be an Australian citizen.
The candidate’s Honours, Masters or PhD thesis or associated research paper should be one that was submitted in 2024. It must have a Petroleum or Energy Resource Geoscience focus within the Northern Territory of South Australia. Qualifying topics include those directly related to the petroleum or related energy resources industries within that territory.
PhD theses by publication may be represented by a nominated chapter prepared or submitted as a research paper for peer review in 2024.
Selection
Assessment of qualifying applications will be based on:
- the academic excellence of the research
- its contribution to understanding Northern Territory petroleum or related energy resource geoscience
- comments from a referee who would ideally be a supervisor of the candidate’s research
An ideal candidate would also demonstrate their intention to pursue a career in industrial upstream petroleum or energy resource development (CO2 storage, H2 storage, deep hydrogeology, geothermal resources) or in related academic research.

All required application forms can be completed by or on behalf of the student candidate. These should be submitted together with an abstract of their thesis/submitted research paper and supporting cover letter.
A research project supervisor may initially make the application on behalf of a candidate’s behalf and attest to the quality of their thesis or submitted research paper.
