Abstract:
Southern Pacific Petroleum NL, Central Pacific Minerals NL (SPP I CPM) and Suncor Energy (Suncor) are currently commissioning a A$250 million R&D demonstration plant to test a new technology for the production of shale oil. Scheduled for operation in late 1999, the plant will produce 4,500 barrels per day. Depending on the success of the demonstration plant (Stage 1) and the scaling up to a commercial-sized module (Stage 2), the project could be expanded to a fully commercial scale by 2007 (Stage 3), producing approximately 85,000 barrels per day. An overview of the geology of the 3 billion-barrel Stuart Oil Shale Deposit is followed by a brief description of the mining and A TP processing technology used to produce a refinery feedstock.
