Abstract:

The Triassic Ipswich Basin and Triassic to Cretaceous Clarence-Moreton Basin, located in southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales, both contain sequences highly prospective for Coal Seam Gas (CSG). Although a number of prospects have been identified by Arrow Energy N.L. , both basins are considered by the author to be under-explored.
The Ipswich Basin, hosting Triassic Ipswich Coal Measures extends from Ipswich in the north, for an unknown
distance south into New South Wales, with a smaller lobe extending northeast beneath Brisbane and Moreton Bay. The Clarence-Moreton Basin, hosting Jurassic Walloon Coal Measures, is equivalent to and continuous with the Surat Basin to the west. It overlies most of the Ipswich Basin except for the area around Ipswich, and a thin strip along the eastern margin of the Basin.
Both basins have combinations of coals with high gas contents and adequate thickness to potentially contain a large "in place" CSG resource. Planning is underway to test producibility of both basins, however, results from analogous basins elsewhere suggest that economic flows should be achievable. The location of both basins close to major gas markets in southeast Queensland is another factor that contributes to their commercial prospectivity.
