Abstract:
The presence of relatively large volumes of hydrocarbons in the Surat and Eromanga Basins in western Queensland has commonly led to speculation about the hydrocarbon potential of the adjacent Clarence-Moreton Basin. It forms the easternmost extension of the Great Artesian Basin along with the Surat and Eromanga Basins. Relatively high thermal maturities occur along the eastern margin of the Clarence-Moreton Basin and thick sequences of source rock, but there has not been a successful hydrocarbon exploration well drilled in the basin based on a conventional hydrocarbon play.Using thermal maturity and source rock data a computer model of the thermal and tectonic evolution of the southeast Clarence-Morton Basin was generated. Low source rock volumes in some areas and low maturities in other areas inhibited the generation of large petroleum accumulations over much of the basin. However, the Rathdowney area, extending north to the eastern side ofthe South Morton Anticline (around GSQ Ipswich 24), is an exception.
