Abstract:
Whilst exploration for gas in conventional reservoirs in the Denison Trough has been comparatively quiescent over the last decade, significant reserves growth has been achieved in this same period by underbalanced drilling, fracture stimulation, drilling for tight gas deeper in the Permo-Triassic stratigraphic section, and by in-field exploration and appraisal drilling. In parallel, reservoir models and prospect risking methods have been refined by integrating the results of recent sequence stratigraphic and ichnological studies. From 1993 to 2003, the estimate of Proved, Probable plus Possible initial conventional gas-in-place in the Denison Trough has risen from 583 billion cubic feet (BCF) to over 790 BCF. Approximately 35% of this increase is attributable to the application of new or different drilling techniques.
Although the exploration and development focus in the Denison Trough is now on coal seam gas (CSG), recent
conventional field appraisal and development drilling outcomes have significantly improved the regional knowledge base, and future success in conventional exploration can be expected.
