Abstract:
The 1950's Premier of South Australia, Sir Thomas Playford was known to channel any conceivable advantage towards the betterment of South Australia. Soon after we had commenced our operations in the northeast corner in 1957 he suggested that Santos should find a transport route to Cardillo Downs on South Australian soil rather than to bring in the supplies via Broken Hill, Tibooburra and southwest Queensland (Fig. 1). The construction of the broad gauge line from Port Augusta to Marree was practically completed, the ceremony of Playford driving in the last, silver coated dog spike into the last sleeper at Marree being scheduled for July 1957.
