Abstract:
Unconventional resource plays have revolutionised the oil and gas industry across North America. Resource plays include shales, where the shale is both source and reservoir, and other ultralow-permeability rocks that contain hydrocarbons which have migrated a very short distance from an interbedded or adjacent source interval. Examples of the former include the Barnett, Marcellus and Fayetteville shales, and the latter include the Bakken, Niobrara and Eagleford formations (Figure 1 ). Producing hydrocarbons from shale and other ultra-tight reservoirs is technologically challenging, and the seismic industry is playing an important role in understanding these complex reservoirs and supporting their economic development.
