Abstract:
(A description of the WEST AUSTRALIAN BASINS SYMPOSIUM scheduled in August 1994.) The sedimentary basins of Western Australia cover a vast region of the continent and adjacent continental shelf, and contain sediments of Tertiary through Proterozoic age. These basins are among the most prospective for petroleum in Australia. The North West Shelf was recognized in the 1980s as a petroleum province of the future and recent exploration there has confirmed both the potential and the challenge. The onshore Canning and Carnarvon basins are experiencing renewed activity; as is the Perth Basin, both offshore and on. The Proterozoic of the interior needs further exploration.
