Abstract:
Petroleum exploration proceeded spasmodically in the Surat Basin and other basins in Australia through to the 1950s, but an oil find at Rough Range in the Carnarvon Basin in Western Australia during 1953 sparked new interest in petroleum exploration. Thereafter, petroleum accumulations were discovered in a number of basins. Further exploration and development drilling in the basins revealed that the resources of natural gas far exceeded those of oil in terms of energy equivalent. Australian sedimentary basins where petroleum accumulations have been identified are considered to be gas prone, and it is expected that the majority of this country's undiscovered resources of petroleum will be in the form of natural gas.
