Abstract:
The Canning Basin of Western Australia covers an area of some 430,000 square kilometres, the accessible part of which is mostly on-shore. The basin covers an area which is approximately three times that of the Cooper Basin and some seven times that of the on-shore and off-shore Gippsland Basin... The petroleum potential of the basin was recognized as early as 1919 but only piecemeal exploration occurred, mostly limited to the Fitzroy River area, until the early 1950s. Since then, a regular yearly exploration programme has been carried out, primarily during the May to October dry season.
