Abstract:
The development of the natural gas market in NSW commenced in 1977 with the arrival of natural gas from SA via the Moomba to Sydney pipeline. This market grew dramatically from 8PJ p.a. in 1976 to 95PJ in 1990. The large industrial market segment is now mature but growth continues in the domestic and small industrial and commercial market segments. The main opportunities in the natural gas market can be expected from new gas applications such as natural gas for vehicles, air conditioning, cogeneration and large scale power generation. To these may be added opportunities for supply to new country regions of NSW. The result will be increased long term demand bringing forward the time when existing supply arrangements are insufficient to meet that demand.
Particular needs of the market that must be understood by potential suppliers will include, gas quality and responsiveness to demand, certainty of supply, contract flexibility to provide the distributor with the ability to deal with uncertainty of demand forecasts, and pricing which allows existing markets to be maintained and new markets developed.
