Abstract:
Over the last decade, no single global issue has been as divisive as that of the environment in relation to the development of resources. The interwoven relationship between material economic policy, resource assessment and environmental sustainability is now a major factor in future resource planning. The Gippsland Basin is undoubtedly Australia's key energy province. Its annual output of primary energy products is worth in excess of $2.5 billion while the total value of in-ground reserves is estimated at a staggering $500 billion. Virtually all Australia's brown coal, about half the country's crude oil and a high proportion of its gas requirements are met from deposits in Gippsland. As a result, the extraction of these raw materials provides the country with a significant economic and industrial base.
